The Value of Inclusivity in the Indonesian National Motto
The world today is a place where every human being can live, grow and thrive. Nothing in this world can be the same; everything in this world is bound to have differences. These differences exist between individuals and in various other aspects. Each individual has their own characteristics. Every individual has their own story. These different stories form the diversity that exists in this world. Diversity itself is something we should be grateful for and respect. There are many forms of diversity in this world, such as skin colour, language, physical appearance, ideology, culture, and others, which make each individual unique. These differences should not be used as a basis for mistakes, divisions, hostility, and other actions arising from these differences. What should be emphasised from diversity is a symbol of unity.
This is where inclusivity comes in, a concept whereby everyone is involved regardless of their ethnic background, race, religion, cultural customs, skin colour, physical appearance, or gender. This concept exists to accept everyone without discrimination or restrictions. Inclusivity is one way of creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. In Indonesia, this concept is also reflected in our national motto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, which means “Unity in Diversity.” These values have served as a unifying force for the Indonesian people for 80 years. Unbeknownst to many, these values have long been ingrained in the Indonesian people, proving that this nation has embraced the concept of inclusivity.
“Gotong royong” (mutual assistance) is one example of this inclusivity, where everyone works together to help one another without exception. This is how it is implemented in society. Its implementation in the world of education is clearly evident in the admission system, which requires all schools to accept students regardless of their background. This is where we know that inclusivity is one way to respect differences and is in line with the values of the Indonesian nation. Although it is not yet fully implemented, we hope that unity will be maintained. Let us realise “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” so that this value spreads widely throughout the world and proves that our nation has long held the value of inclusivity, which can serve as an example for other nations. From us to all, regardless of differences.
